Scientifically, they are exactly the same species (Cylisticus convexus), but visually, they look completely different!
The Wild Type ("Curly Teardrop") is the natural, baseline version of the bug. They are a uniform, solid slate-grey color with no white markings.
  • The "Ukraine Pied" is a specialized color mutation (called a "morph"). Breeders found a few wild gray ones in Ukraine that accidentally had small white spots. They bred those spotted ones together for generations until they created a line that produces striking white-and-gray tiger stripes and "dalmatian" patterns
"Curly Teardrop" Isopod (Cylisticus convexus)
  •  The quirky, fearless hybrid that brings a completely unique twist to the classic roly-poly.
  • “Widely known as the “Curly Woodlouse,” is a hardy, adaptable species...” that offers a truly unique defensive style. “...though it can conlobate or roll itself up into a ball, it doesn't do so quite as completely as the more familiar armadillidium species...” Instead, “...they're unique in that they do not fold in their antennae when conglobating... and have a slight teardrop shape...” accompanied by “...little tail spikes [pointy uropods]...” proudly sticking out! They act “...like a perfect hybrid of Armadillidium and pruinosus,” combining the cute ball-up defense of a pillbug with the blistering, lightning-fast surface activity of a powder isopod. “They are fearless, extremely active little isopods...” that are incredibly fun to watch as they fearlessly scramble around their habitat in plain sight.
  • Best Suited For: All-purpose bioactive cleanup crews, beginners looking for an exceptionally forgiving starter colony, and keepers who appreciate quirky, unique defensive behaviors.
  • Quick Care: Exceptionally bulletproof and “...tolerant of a wide range of conditions, these isopods thrive in arid, temperate, and tropical environments...” “This isopod is undemanding regarding ventilation or a moisture gradient...” though they appreciate a standard setup with a damp corner of sphagnum moss. Because they are highly “...fossorial [burrowers] but are not particular about specific humidity...”, provide 2 to 3 inches of substrate depth mixed with plenty of decaying leaf litter and rotting wood. Fuel their year-round breeding cycles with a diverse menu of fresh vegetables, high-protein fish flakes, and a permanent calcium source like cuttlebone.
  • Always feel free to message or call for more information on care or if wanting a premade Start up kit
